At back to school night, the teachers emphasized the need for kids to do their own writing in their homework assignments. And by emphasized, I really mean said over and over and over again. What this means is that the parents should let the kids figure out the letters in their words using phonetics. Much to Andy's dismay, we have been encouraging him to sound out his words as he writes them. With all his humphing, you would think we were asking him to transcribe volumes instead of about 7 1/2 minutes of focus. Below is a picture (poorly lit and seemingly unfixable) of tonight's assignment; he had to draw the shapes and write their names. It's a great example because it doesn't require a translation, as so many of them do :).

It turns out that he has a burning need to be right all the time (no idea where he got that!). As a result, Cory and find ourselves smiling and nodding every time he frantically asks something like, "C? Is it a C? Please tell me!". I actually think he's onto something though... it would be much easier to teach reading and writing if his logic ruled.
On the other hand, his logic for more practical issues is still developing. See just about any other post as evidence to that fact.
